"I feel, as a modern classical musician, having the knowledge of both music performance and music technology is invaluable. Only having the skill to perform an instrument may not necessarily be lucrative, however having that skill as well as excellent music production capabilities will ensure many more career opportunities and financial security. That way they learn to use the best of both worlds.”

| AR Rehman on Filmfare nomination |
2/21/2008 10:21:45 AM
In an exclusive interview with Times Now, AR Rehman , the music maestro spoke about his first ever nomination as a Playback singer for the 53rd Filmfare awards. Filmfare awards may crowd AR Rahman's mantelpiece, but the 53rd Filmfare Awards will be extra special as he has been nominated in the Best Playback Singer category for the first time for Tere Bina from Mani Ratnam's Guru.
Rehman will compete with the best in the industry. The other nominees in the same category are:
K K - Aankhon Mein Teri (Om Shanti Om)
Shaan - Jab Se Tere Naina (Saawariya)
Sonu Nigam - Main Agar Kahoon (Om Shanti Om)
Sukhawinder Singh - Chak De (Chak De! India)
Times Now managed to find out the reticent musician's reaction on his nomination. AR Rehman said, "Guru is not an ordinary film for me. It is an extraordinary one. I feel good that people are acknowledging me as a good singer. I was not well when the song was recorded. So, it sounded shaky. Filmfare has become almost like a home for me now. "
So, the question remains whether Rehman will have yet another award to add to his collection. One will have to wait for February 24, 2008 to find out who bags the coveted Best Singer Award.

Kaizad Gustad’s Bombil And Beatrice ready for release |
07 Nov, 2007 11:11 am IST l George Ignatius/INDIATIMES MOVIES

Though Kaizad Gustad was in the midst of a big controversy following the death of one of his assistants during the filming of his film Bombay Central, he was quick enough to film his other movie.
Despite Boom having bombed at the box-office, producer Ayesha Shroff has shown unflinching faith in director Kaizad Gustad and both have together completed a film titled Bombil And Beatrice .
Says producer Ayesha Shroff, “The film is now complete and we will be announcing the release date pretty soon. We have seen the first copy and it really looks gorgeous.”
About the film she says, “ Bombil And Beatrice is a supernatural love story and it will span across a period of 100 years. This movie has been the combined effort of Indo-British people who ensemble our whole unit. A British actress Kate McGuiness plays the lead role opposite Prashant Narayanan and both of them are outstanding in the film. And as far as the music is concerned, the film’s score has been composed by maestro A R Rahman.”
Sandhya is another movie that was produced by Ayesha a while back and has been in the cans for quite a while. The film stars a whole lot of actors other than the lead pair of Jackie Shroff and Raveena Tandon and was directed by Sangeeth Sivan of Apna Sapna Money Money fame. Ayesha elaborates on the film saying, “ Sandhya is a supernatural thriller and is a nerve wrecking and scary film. Apart from Jackie and Raveena the film also stars Sophia Haque, Ashutosh Rana, Danny Denzongpa and Jaaved Jaffrey. We will announce a release date for that film shortly too.”

| Rahman's next album after 'Vande Mataram' |
April 12, 2008 2:01:43 PM IST |
Abid, Bollywood Trade News Network
Way back in the late 90s, A.R. Rahman's audio album for Sony, 'Vande Mataram', rocked the nation. In fact, it rekindled the patriotic spirit of 'Vande Mataram' through its contemporary sounds and classy arrangements. The album also marked the first and sadly the last union of two maestros. Obviously we are referring to the man himself, A.R.Rahman and the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the legendary sufi qawwali singer, whose replacement has still not been found in the music world.
Coming back to our headlines, especially for those music lovers who are wondering as to when the composer of works like ROJA, DIL SE, TAAL, LAGAAN........to the recent JODHAA AKBAR, will come up with another album, after the stupendous success of 'Vande Mataram'. Well, the long wait is more or less over and the good news is that music wizard A.R.Rahman is busy working on his next album. As per very reliable sources, almost a decade after 'Vande Mataram' , Rahman's next album should be out later this year, more details of which are expected soon.
So, all you Rahmaniacs out there, keep watching this space for more!

| 'Jodhaa Akbar' now in Tamil |
Ashutosh Gowariker’s magnum opus 'Jodhaa Akbar', starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai,
after having impressed the hindi-speaking audience, would now be released in Tamil.
The music for the film is by maestro A.R. Rahman, who has come out with some grand numbers. The Tamil lyrics have been written by Na. Muthukumar. The audio, that has been released recently, is doing well, say sources.
The film has turned out to be a super-hit, especially in the overseas market where it is doing terrific business aided by favourable reviews from the foreign press. The domestic revenue too has been above average considering that the film has not been released in Rajasthan and has been banned in Madhya Pradesh and certain other areas.
The Hindi version, released two weeks back, has so far collected 65 lakhs from Chennai alone. This is indeed quite a feat, considering the film’s running time of 3 hours and 30 minutes.
However, UTV is planning to release a more tightly-edited version. The dubbed version would be released across Tamil Nadu on 6th of March.

| Bountiful year for Rahmaniacs! |
January 24, 2008 3:05:42 PM IST || Abid, Bollywood Trade News Network
The year 2007 saw no audio offering from the 'Beethovan of the East', A R Rahman. Are we missing out his superb compositions from Mani Ratnam's GURU? No certainly not! The audio album of GURU was unveiled in 2006 itself, though the movie released in January 2007. No wonder then that the fans of the maestro were heard complaining.
The reason for Rahman's absence was more technical as he wanted to break the hegemony of some audio giants. However, the current year is likely to more than compensate for his absence last year. While his magnificent JODHAA AKBAR audio is out and is delighting the music lovers all over the world, four more probable gems are lined up. Yes, Rahman's YUVRAAJ (for Ghai), GHAJINI remake and JAANE TU YA JAANE NA (both for close friend Aamir Khan) and also DILLI 6 for Rakeysh Mehra, are all likely to hit the stores in 2008.
Well, Glamsham definitely deserves a treat from Rahman fans for breaking the good news. Happy listening!

| It's official: Rajni signs Robot |
January 07, 2008 14:51 IST
Last Updated: January 08, 2008 10:27 IST
Leading Tamil director Shankar has signed on Rajnikanth, fresh from the stupendous success of his latest starrer Sivaji, for his next project titled Robot.
That of course should come as no surprise to Rediff readers -- we had reported on the possibilities a few days before the news became official.
Shankar has been toying with the casting of this film for years now. Initially, he considered Kamal Haasan, but the Tamil superstar blotted his copybook with the box office fiasco Alavandaan (Abhay, in Hindi) and, simultaneously, had creative differences with a director who is very firm about what he wants.
Shankar moved on to other projects; in the background, however, he was engaged in negotations with Shah Rukh Khan.
Khan had for long expressed a desire to work with Shankar, and at one point promised bulk dates. However, on this particular project, Khan reportedly did not quite see eye to eye with the director, who put the project back on the shelf.
Aamir Khan was next in line, but negotiations broke down at the preliminary stage itself though neither the star nor the director have revealed what the sticking point was.
Finally, Shankar has his male lead -- and the casting of Rajnikanth removes a lot of headaches. Firstly, any film starring the South's reigning superstar gets sold as soon as it is announced, and for whopping sums at that, so the director with a penchant for enormous budgets will have all the money he wants to play with.
Further, Shankar -- fresh from his successful collaboration with Rajni on Sivaji -- plans to make the film simultaneously in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and possibly Malayalam, thus opening up more areas of the country to exploit. Early word is that while Shankar hasn't finished costing his film yet, it could prove to be among the top two or three most expensive films ever made in India.
By way of bonus, Shankar has roped in A R Rahman to score the music, teaming up with a composer who was a major factor in ensuring that Shankar's early films were superhits.
He is currently busy finalising the rest of the cast, and the technical crew. Of the movie itself, little is known; Shankar has a reputation for being close-mouthed about his subjects.
However, inside buzz on a project that has been in the planning stage for years now is that the storyline will feature a man who also, in the film, has a robotic avtaar; hi-tech special effects is believed to be a vital component of the film, and insiders say Shankar has for some time now been in discussions with various top professionals, both in India and abroad, and is on the verge of finalising the outfit that will provide the tech component.

| Jodha Akbar`s music will be liked by critics, people: Rahman |
New Delhi, Oct 16: Often considered as the 'Mozart of Asia,' musician A R Rahman has done everything from classical to reggae and now with Shekar Kapur's 'Elizabeth: the Golden Age' awaiting release, where he pairs up with Hollywood actor Craig Armstrong, he is very excited.
"It has been really a wonderful experience working with Craig. We traveled a lot in places like Glasgow...Remotely working with the guys in London," says Rahman who was in the capital recently.
The singer-composer has his hands full with a lot of films, the latest being Ashutosh Gowarikers 'Jodha Akbar' starring Hrithik Roshan and Ashwariya Rai Bachchan.
"Jodha Akbar is a romantic story about a king falling in love with a princess and I have tried to keep the music contemporary so that it satisfies both critics and the music lovers," he says.
"The music of the film is very much what is required for the film. We have celebration songs and quawallis," he adds. Rahman, who composed the music of Subhash Ghei's 'Kisna' is once again paring up with the director in his latest flick, 'Yuvraaj'.
"Yuvraaj is a very challenging project. We had a hard time composing the first two songs but now as those have been cracked, we hope we will be able to wrap it up quickly," he says.
